Product Description

The didgeridoo (or didjeridu) is a wind instrument of the Indigenous Australians of northern Australia. It is a traditional aboriginal instrument that consists of a long cylindrical tube, that is played by "blowing" in a similar way that a trumpet or other brass instrument is played. Didjeridu's are traditionally made of a hollowed out log, although there are a variety of novel, and more modern, materials used to create these instruments just like this one.<... More >>

I read recently that playing the didgeridoo can benefit people with moderate sleep apnea, daytime sleepiness and heavy snoring. I thought it looked like fun and decided to give it a try. To my surprise it was easy to learn, it’s definitely very unusual and makes that pleasant, slightly eerie buzzing drone you’ve probably heard a hundred times in movies but never knew how it was produced. I actually bought two, one for a friend, and when alternating (circular breathing is a more advanced technique that thus far eludes me) we could generate the deep resonating tones of the didgeridoo for long periods of time, with variations and rhythm. I’m sure the neighbors found it interesting to hear this unusual sound coming from his back yard on Christmas day. Over the long holiday weekend, relatives and friends and even children gave it a try, and everyone found it fun and met with at least some success with very little need for instruction or practice. It’s a “pick it up and play” instrument where initial success was followed by rewarding development for those who continued the effort. Oh, and to my great surprise, having read that the beneficial health effects were months in the making in the clinical studies, it was reported to me (by people to whom my snoring is the stuff of legend) that I slept quietly and peacefully and nobody wondered if they should inform local seismologists that everything was fine :)
